Prenatal & Pediatrics Techniques

Prenatal & Infant

Prenatal care during pregnancies, aids in making  pregnancies more comfortable,  achieves balance in your spine and pelvis, and has been shown to improve labor experience/outcome.

A woman’s body must go through major changes to accommodate a growing baby. Her ribs and pelvis actually start to expand outward within the first three months, due to an increase in hormones which relax the ligaments that hold the bones together. Although this is necessary for a healthy labor, it also can cause women to have new and unique discomforts, as parts of her body that had lined up a certain way for years now move in entirely new positions . Many women complain of lower back, rib, and pubic bone pain, sometimes very early on in pregnancy*. Headaches, carpal tunnel, nausea are also a common issue during child bearing months.

Sacral misalignment causes the tightening and torsion of specific pelvic muscles and ligaments. It is these tense muscles and ligaments and their constraining effect on the uterus which prevents the baby from comfortably assuming the best possible position for birth. Chiropractic care focuses on restoring the spine to a healthier state. This allows not only for improved motion at the joints, but more importantly for improved activity of the nerves that pass through and around those joints. Proper nerve function is key to reduced pain and fewer complications in pregnancy.

Webster Technique

Perhaps the most well-known role for chiropractic in the birthing community is the Webster Technique, which is designed to provide more room in the mom’s pelvis. By applying gentle adjustments to the sacrum and soft pressure to the round ligaments, tight muscles that affect the uterus can relax. This provides the optimum environment for your baby, allowing for an increased opportunity to deliver naturally.

This technique is highly effective and a gentle way to adjust a pregnant woman and their children.

Dr. Larry Webster, Founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association discovered the Webster technique as a safe means to restore proper pelvic balance and function for pregnant mothers. In expectant mothers presenting breech, there has been a high reported success rate of the baby turning to the normal vertex position. This technique has been successfully used in women whose babies present transverse and posterior as well. It has also successfully used with twins. At no time should this technique be interpreted as an obstetric, “breech turning” technique.

It is strongly recommended by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) instructors of this technique that this specific analysis and adjustment of the sacrum be used throughout pregnancy, to detect imbalance and optimize pelvic biomechanics in preparation for safer, easier births. Because of the effect the chiropractic adjustment has on all body functions by reducing nerve system stress, pregnant mothers should have their spines checked regularly throughout pregnancy, optimizing health benefits for both the mother and baby.

Chiropractic for Children

Half of our practice is pediatric patients. We can assist newborns with torticollis, and digestive issues- including colic through the evaluation of the bones in the spine. We have seen dramatic improvements in motor skills and watched missed milestones get caught up after a correction in spinal misalignment. We have helped many toddlers with chronic ear infections, and coughs and helped older kids with sports injuries as well.

From birth, children are rapidly growing and developing. A child’s brain will be 80% of an adult size by the age of 3 and 90% of an adult size by the age of 5. The early years are a critical time for the nervous system to be functioning at an optimal level. Chiropractors deliver very safe, gentle adjustments for children to help keep their nervous systems functioning at 100%.

Through chiropractic care and proper diet, children are able to avoid common childhood ailments such as ear infections, asthma, colic, and other developmental issues. Not only that, but children are set up for a lifetime of health and properly functioning nervous system!

Young children often suffer from recurring ear infections. When the problem is due to fluid not draining properly through the Eustachian tubes, chiropractic may help. Subluxations, or disturbances of the neurospinal system in the upper neck can tighten the muscles around the Eustachian tube, which prevents fluid from draining. Adjustments relieve pressure on the nerves, which relax the muscles and allow drainage of the fluid through the tube.
